HIGHLIGHT BOLIVIA-BRAZIL
Brazil and Bolivia Receive WHOA Certification for FMD-free without Vaccination
- On May 29, 2025, Bolivia and Brazil reached a significant health milestone by receiving an international certification from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) as countries free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) without vaccination. After nearly 50 years of applying vaccinations as a method of control and eradication, the 240 million bovines in Brazil and 15 million in Bolivia will no longer need to be vaccinated against FMD; this represents an enormous economic investment and effort for the producers. This new status can expand commercial opportunities and open new markets for animals and their products in countries such as Japan and South Korea.
- The neighboring countries of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay have not set a date for stopping vaccination. With this new certification, 65% of the bovine herd in South America is FMD-free without vaccination.
- Significance: Safeguarding U.S. agriculture by supporting FMD eradication in South America.
USDA/APHIS have offered a tremendous amount of support to Brazil and Bolivia in order to reach this milestone of eradicating foot and mouth disease. Reaching this goal plays a major factor in lowering the risk of a foot and mouth disease outbreak here in the United States and also helps keep a healthy livestock herd. The Illinois Soybean Board, National Pork Board and/USDA/APHIS helped with some of my expenses as I served on the Inter America Group for Eradication of foot and mouth disease (GIEFA). My involvement began in 1989 when I served as President of the US Animal Health Association and ended after serving as president of the GIEFA group in 2012.
